ASTIGMATISM
Understanding your options for sharper vision
If you’ve been struggling with unclear vision then understanding astigmatism and its treatment options may help you find the best solution for sharper sight.

What is astigmatism?
Astigmatism is a common vision condition that causes blurry or distorted vision due to an irregularly shaped cornea — the clear front part of your eye.
A normal cornea is shaped like a perfect sphere, similar to a basketball. With astigmatism, the cornea is shaped more like a rugby ball (or American football). This uneven shape bends light incorrectly, leading to blurred or distorted vision.
How does astigmatism affect vision?
When the cornea isn’t evenly curved, light doesn’t focus properly on the retina, causing:
Blurry or fuzzy vision at all distances
Distorted or stretched images
Eye strain, headaches, or difficulty seeing at night
Astigmatism often occurs alongside:

Near-sightedness (myopia)
Clear vision up close, but distant objects appear blurry

Far-sightedness (hyperopia)
Clear distant vision, but nearby objects are blurry
Treatment options for astigmatism
Glasses or contact lenses
Common and effective solutions for vision correction
Laser eye surgery
A permanent reshaping of the cornea for clearer vision
Toric intraocular lenses
If you’re having cataract surgery or presbyopia surgery, your surgeon may recommend a toric IOL to also correct astigmatism
Considering surgery?
A toric IOL might be right for you
If you’re considering cataract or presbyopia surgery, a toric intraocular lens like the RayOne Galaxy Toric IOL offers a long-term solution to astigmatism, helping to reduce your reliance on glasses after surgery.
